Today's Mercator Film GmbH derived from the Mercator
Filmverleih was founded in 1957 by Bodo Gaus. Annually, at least
10 new international publications were presented to the audience.
Due to the experience of Bodo Gaus, Mercator became a well known
name in the movie industry. Highlights like the 70mm movies BOLSCHOI
BALLETT, DORNRÖSCHEN and the Hollywood-classic LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED
THING starring Jennifer Jones and William Holden guaranteed early
success. Further, many productions that were released demonstrate
the great variety of action, horror, science fiction, thriller movies
and later erotic films. The company also used to own nine movie
theatres which again underlines and completes the manifold activities
of Mercator Filmverleih.

In 1970, Dieter Gaus, the son of the company founder,
became manager of MERCATOR Filmverleih GmbH.
Productions like "Der Stern von Afrika" and the
children's movie "Heidi", besides many other publications had a
successful revival in the
movie theatres.
In 1976 a change of law made it possible to publish
pornographic productions in the movie theatres. Mercator invented
the logo LOVE-IN. Due to great experience in the movie market, Mercator
presented only pornographic movies which completely hit the taste
of the audience; for example, German productions of ribu-Film. Quickly,
LOVE-IN became a known label for quality and success.

Soon after, the video cassette conquered the movie-market
and first cooperation contracts with video distributors were signed.
Starting in the early 90s, television became more and more popular
besides the still growing video market. Especially after the emergence
of private TV stations more attention was paid to this sector. The
company changed from the traditional movie theatre distribution
business to a company that is now more focused and involved in trading
movie rights. Due to these changes, the company name was changed
from Mercator Filmverleih to Mercator Film GmbH.
Today's main business involves trading with movie
rights, especially for erotic and porno-graphic movie productions.
The company owns more than 500 titles and increases their stock
continously.
MERCATOR Film also represent German and international
producers for German broadcast distributions.
